Support for disabilities

All students at GIH should be able to study on equal terms. If you have a disability, it is possible to receive support in your study situation.

What is meant by disability?

The Discrimination Act (2008:567) defines disability as: "permanent physical, mental or intellectual limitations of a person's functional capacity that, as a result of an injury or illness existed at birth, have arisen thereafter or can be expected to occur."

A temporary injury or illness that is expected to pass is not defined as a permanent disability.

Examples of disabilities that may entitle you to study support:

  • Reading and writing difficulties
  • Neuropsychiatric disabilities
  • Mental illness
  • Visual or hearing impairments
  • Mobility impairments
  • Chronic diseases other medical conditions that affect the study situation

Who can receive study support?

In order to be granted study support, you need to have documentation (a medical statement or a medical certificate) that proves permanent disability.

You must apply well in advance so that there is time to prepare the support before the start of the semester. Feel free to apply as soon as you have received your admission decision.

Apply for study support

GIH makes decisions about pedagogical support through Sweden's National Administration and Information System for Coordinators (Nais).

To apply for study support, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Nais website External link, opens in new window. and select the higher education institution "The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences".
  • Log in with your GIH account or the same login you use for antagning.se and follow the instructions.
  • Check your contact details.
  • Upload certificates that prove your disability.
  • Describe your study situation; which course or programme you will take and how you think your disability will affect your studies.
  • Please check your application and submit.

Once you have made your application, you will be able to book a meeting with GIH's coordinator for students with disabilities. You will then go through what support you need.

Before the meeting, it is helpful to reflect on what has not worked in your previous studies and what you think you need. The support must be reasonable based on your disability as well as the course requirements and intended learning outcomes. Certificates or investigations, not least in the case of dyslexia, can serve as a good basis for planning, as special support needs are often stated in them.

Certificate of support measures

After the meeting, the coordinator prints out a certificate of the support that has been decided. The certificate may also include recommendations, in which the institution in question decides on support. Along with the certificate, you will also receive a cover letter outlining the conditions for receiving the support.

This support you can get

There are several different forms of pedagogical support. It is you and GIH's coordinator for students with disabilities who together discuss what may be relevant for you.

Note-taking assistance

Note-taking assistance means that you get help from a classmate with notes during lectures and seminars.

You must attend the lecture or seminar yourself to get note-taking assistance. As the recipient of the support, you are responsible for the processing of the notes. Notes may only be used for personal use and may not be disseminated further. You cannot get note-taking help in practical reviews or group seminars.

You are responsible for asking a classmate if they would like to help you.

Decisions on note-taking assistance are made by GIH's coordinator for students with disabilities.

You who are providing note-taking support for a person with a disability

If you want to be a note-taking supporter, you need to apply for a job. Contact GIH's coordinator for students with disabilities for more information.

As note-taking support, you are employed for two semesters.

Fees

As note-taking support, you receive a fee of SEK 50 per hour for one student, SEK 100 per hour for two students, and so on.

To receive your fee, you must fill out a form and send it to the coordinator no later than the 10th of each month (except in June and December, when it must be received no later than the 3rd). You will receive your fee around the 25th of the same month.

Forms for employment and hour specifications are sent out by the coordinator at the time of employment.

Student mentor

A student mentor helps with study planning and study techniques.

The idea is that the mentor support should be an introduction to planning and structuring, and help you become more independent in your studies.

If you are granted mentor support, the coordinator will advertise the position among students in higher grades at GIH. Mentors should be students who are experienced in their studies, who have very good study habits, good foresight in planning, and who have passed all courses without any problems.

The decision on support applies for a maximum of 3 hours per week. If there are good reasons, the support can be extended.

Sign language interpreter

Students who are hard of hearing or deaf can receive sign language support in their instruction.

The need for a sign language interpreter should be reported well in advance of the start of the training.

It is important that you carefully read through what applies, such as when to cancel the interpreter if you cannot attend the teaching yourself.

Decisions on sign language interpreters are made by GIH's coordinator for students with disabilities in connection with admission.

Extended exam time and alternative exam

If, due to your disability, you are unable to complete the exam according to the regular form, you have the opportunity to get an extended exam time by 25 per cent or an alternative exam.

An extended exam time means that you get a little longer than other students. An alternative exam could be to allow the use of a computer with speech synthesis during written exams.

A decision to extend or alter the exam is made in consultation between the examiner and the education coordinator. It is the examiner who decides on the form of examination.

Borrowing a computer for an exam

If necessary, you can borrow a computer from GIH to do your written exam.

You are responsible for reporting your need to borrow a computer from the responsible teacher or exam coordinator at the start of the course.

You are not allowed to pick up the computer yourself before the examination, but you will receive it from the exam coordinator at the time of the examination. The computer must be returned to the invigilator or teacher immediately after the examination.

To receive support, it must be included in the certificate as a decision or a recommendation.

Audio recording during lectures

If necessary, you can record audio from a lecture, for example with your phone.

Inform the teacher or lecturer well in advance of the lecture that you need to record. To record the lecture, you must be present during the lecture.

The sound recording must comply with the rules regarding sound recordings, including that it may be used only for personal use and must be deleted when no longer needed.

More time for written assignments

If necessary, you can have more time for essays, take-home exams and assignments, for example.

Your notice states what you are entitled to.

You must inform the teacher of your decision on the support no later than the start of the course.

Adapted course literature and tutor help

If you have difficulty reading the course literature, you can listen to the books instead. You can also get help with reading course compendiums from GIH.

Speech synthesis

If you have difficulty reading the course literature, you can listen to the books instead. You can then download or stream the books via the talking book catalogue Legimus. You can get login details for Legimus from GIH's library.

Articles and shorter texts that are not in Legimus can be read aloud using the ClaroRead program. This program is available to all GIH students. Individual chapters in a book (maximum 15 pages due to copyright rules) can be scanned, text interpreted, and then read aloud by ClaroRead.

For more information, contact GIH's library.

Tutor help

In exceptional cases, you can get help from a lecturer, meaning you can read the course compendia from GIH. Please note that this applies only to small amounts of text and that, given the time-consuming nature of reading a compendium, good foresight is required.

Contact your teacher if you need this.

Additional support measures

Here you will find information about other support that you can receive if you have a disability.

Extra supervision

If necessary, you have the opportunity to receive remedial teaching or extra guidance. Decisions are made by the department.

Assistive listening devices

You can borrow a portable hearing loop if you are going to have a lecture in a room where there is no fixed loop. In the auditorium, there is a fixed hearing loop.

Review of the course memo for planning the studies.

Support is recommended to be provided by the responsible teacher or the student mentor. Contact the course teacher no later than at the start of the course if needed.

Distribution of lecture material before the lesson.

Contact the course teacher no later than at the start of the course if needed.

Presentation in small groups.

The opportunity to give a presentation in a smaller group can be a good support when it comes to neuropsychiatric diagnosis or mental illness, where there is indicated social anxiety or difficulty concentrating. Contact the course teacher no later than at the start of the course if needed.

Extra supervision when writing essays.

Contact the course teacher no later than at the start of the course if needed.

Physical study environment

If necessary, you can get adaptations for your physical study environment, such as standing desks. If necessary, send an email to studievagledning@gih.se.

Other special arrangements in education

In agreement with the student, GIH also offers:

  • Copying images before lectures
  • Copying with larger text for easier reading
  • Use of simple calculators during exams
  • Adapted, smaller groups in laboratory sessions

Here we have collected tips that can be useful if you are a student with a disability.

The Writing Guide

The writing guide has been developed by libraries and writing workshops at four different universities and provides support in academic writing.

Tips on study techniques

Tips and advice on study techniques from Stockholm University.

Tools for reading, writing and counting

The Dyslexia Association has developed proposals for aids for reading, writing, and arithmetic.

Your responsibility to receive support

To get the right support from the start, you must contact the examiner or course coordinator well in advance, no later than at the start of the course. Show your certificate and discuss which support recommendations are possible for the current course. This applies mainly to compulsory elements and learning activities.

At the start of the course, you should also contact the examiner to discuss how tests and examinations can be adapted.

Responsibility for tools

Keep in mind that you are responsible for using the tools available to support at GIH, such as speech synthesis, spelling software, and recording tools.

Other support?

If you feel you need additional pedagogical support beyond what you and the coordinator have agreed on, you should contact the coordinator to discuss it.
