The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH

The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH, formerly Stockholm University College of Physical Education and Sports, was founded in 1813 by Pehr Henrik Ling, which makes it the oldest university college in the world within its field.

GIH is centrally located next to a beautiful eco park with both natural and cultural significance, offering excellent opportunities for sports and recreation. The 1912 Olympic Stadium is situated near the campus, which creates a special atmosphere.

GIH offers degree programmes preparing for the teaching profession in Physical Education as well as for careers in Sport Coaching, Sport Management or Preventive Health. The university college provides high quality teaching, primarily within the areas of Human Biology, Physical Education and Pedagogy/Didactics. The degree programme duration is three to five years. Currently, about 1 000 students are enrolled.

In general, all classes are given in Swedish, with the exception of some single courses, mainly at Masters level/second cycle.

At second cycle level, GIH offers a one year and a two year Masters degree. Since 2010, GIH offers doctoral/third cycle studies in the form of a four year programme (doctoral degree) or a two year programme (licentiate degree).

GIH is conducting research in a variety of areas within sport and health and has extensive research cin Stockholm which includes Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
