Abstract

Below you can read summaries about the project in English and/or Swedish. The information is taken from the publication database DiVA.

A collaboration between the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH) and 13 fire departments in southeastern Svealand aims to develop standardized, cost-effective physical fitness tests for firefighter recruitment and annual assessments. A key outcome is the Pyramid Test, where participants run over a pyramid-shaped structure for three minutes. The test shows a strong correlation with firefighting-specific tasks, oxygen uptake, and strength, explaining 71% of task performance variance. It is practical, inexpensive, and suitable for diverse populations. Future research will explore links between physical capacity and health markers, with the goal of national and international implementation. The project highlights the importance of collaboration between academia and rescue services, offering solutions applicable to other physically demanding professions, such as military and police units.
