Knowledge in sport science is organized at GIH in seven subject areas, which form the basis for education and research.
Each subject area represents specific knowledge and perspectives on issues related to sport, physical activity, and health.
Each area has a head of subject with special responsibility for the development of the subject area. The assignment as head of subject also includes working for an expanded connection between education, collaboration, and research.
The research groups active at GIH all have a domicile in one of the seven subject areas, although much of the research is multidisciplinary.

The seven subject areas
Biomechanics
Biomechanics is the study of forces that affect a living body and the movement they bring about, including how muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments work together to produce movement and are affected by it. Head of subject Toni Arndt.
Physiology
Physiology is the study of how living organisms work. At GIH we study how the human body adapts to physical exercise/environmental stress and how these adaptations are regulated. Our research has implications for competitive sports, recreational activities and general health. Head of subject Abram Katz.
Physical activity and health
Physical activity and health concerns the effects of physical activity that can be linked to human mental or physical health. Individual, psychosocial and environmental factors that are linked to human activity, as well as effects of influencing them, are included as key aspects. Head of subject Örjan Ekblom.
Psychology
Psychology is about how psychological factors and processes affect the individual in sports and physical activity. With a focus on sports, psychology as a subject area is both about performance in competitive sports and physical activity and health. Head of subject Magnus Lindwall.
Sport Culture
Sport Culture concerns knowledge of the culture and organisation of sports. This includes questions about communication, governance, professionalisation and commercialization in sports. Both contemporary and historical perspectives are included. Head of subject Åsa Bäckström.
Sport Education
Sport Education concerns knowledge in different movement practices and teaching in these practices. At GIH, the area is organised in ball games, outdoor life (friluftsliv), gymnastics and athletics, and movement and dance. Typically, knowledge of sport education is expressed in motion. Head of subject Håkan Larsson.
Sport Pedagogy
Sport Pedagogy concerns knowledge about education, learning, education and influence in sports contexts. Of central interest are studies on children, young people and adults' opportunities to participate in and have an influence on their sports. Head of subject Karin Redelius.
