Neurophysiological effects of physical activity

Exercise neurophysiology is a theme within the framework of the E-PABS project. The theme examines the effects of exercise on brain health.

Man in wheelchair at the gym

Within the theme Exercise neurophysiology, we will develop knowledge on what intensities and patterns of physical activity are needed to promote cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and biochemical pathways for brain health in healthy as well as in neurologically compromised populations.

Research leaders are Docent Maria Ekblom and Assistant University Lecturer Jonna Nilsson Horre.

Planned projects

Planned projects within the theme Exercise neurophysiology:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy and physical activity – A randomized controlled study of stress related disorders. Project leaders Victoria Blom (PI) and Maria Ekblom.
  • Brain release of neurotrophic factors in response to exercise. Project leaders Marcus Moberg (PI), Abram Katz and Maria Ekblom.
  • Activity breaks for brain health in wheelchair users. Project leaders Anna Bjerkefors, Marcus Moberg and Maria Ekblom.
  • Biomarkers of neurodegeneration and neuroplasticity and their relationship to physical activity patterns. Project leaders Jonna Nilsson Horre, Marcus Moberg and Maria Ekblom.

Knowledge and research findings

The knowledge developed in this theme is co-produced with our collaborative industrial and societal partners. The research findings are directly communicated with the societal stakeholders, but the knowledge and methodological platforms developed through these projects are also used as input in new research designs.
